Dr. Wharton Presents: Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™

Recognizing obstruction in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy requires more than identifying a thickened septum.

In this physician-led echocardiography activity, Dr. Ronald H. Wharton uses clinical imaging and real-world case examples to demonstrate how obstructive HCM appears on 2D, color, and spectral Doppler imaging.

You’ll learn to recognize dynamic LVOT obstruction, use physiologic provocation when resting findings may underestimate obstruction, and distinguish LVOT signals from mitral regurgitation and other obstructive Doppler patterns.

You’ll also review the characteristic late-peaking Doppler contour of dynamic LVOT obstruction and practical approaches for localizing and separating potentially confusing high-velocity signals.

On completion you will be able to

1
Differentiate dynamic LVOT obstruction from fixed obstruction using Doppler contour and localization.
2
Use provocative maneuvers when resting imaging may underestimate LVOT obstruction.
3
Distinguish LVOT obstruction from mitral regurgitation and other obstructive Doppler signals.

Who this is for

Designed for physicians, cardiac sonographers and other health care professionals who acquire, interpret, or report echocardiographic findings in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
